Old town tour

According to the city map, go to the gable end of the town hall, where the local Roland stands on a corbel (2).
From there you go to the opposite street, the connection from Langen Straße to Achterstraße. There you will come across two well-preserved half-timbered houses (1645 and 1448).

At the latter half-timbered house you will see a sandstone spout (3).
At Achterstrasse, turn left and go to the castle complex (4). This is one of the oldest still preserved swamp castles in Europe and has some Romanesque elements, but has undergone multiple renovations and uses over the centuries. Signs in the plant provide information about this.

From the castle you go back towards the city wall, where you get to the former Braunschweiger Tor (5), which is symbolized by an oak gate wing. A few meters further you will pass the last of what were once 5 battle towers (6). Further along, you will learn other special features on the city wall, such as the bulges (7) that are still there, where a battlement was once anchored, and the vegetation on the city wall (8). When you get back to Achterstraße, you will see one of the oldest half-timbered buildings (9) in northern Germany on the right on the opposite side of the street. On the courtyard side you can still see the stand construction very well. The Protestant rectory (10) is located a little towards the church. Arrived at the partially Romanesque Katharinen Church, a crucifix with 4 other figures can be seen on the western tower wall (11). The city’s former school (12) was located directly behind the church.

With the potter’s gate, there was another city gate behind the school (13). From here a stick dam leads into the swampy Drömling. Back to the Katharinen Church you stand on the city side in front of the associated sacristy (14). The neighboring Schildplatz (15) was next to the then still smaller market square the largest in town. One of several public wells or pumps was also located here. Mauerstr (16) got its name because the city wall was where the sidewalk runs today. The protective wall (17) in front of the Mühlaller bordered the east side of the city along the local streets. At the end of the street on the right is the former pharmacy (18), which was there from 1738-1992.

To the left of the alley, directly in front of the Mühlaller, was the Magdeburger Tor (19) on the city side. The community fountain (20) at the entrance of the Dämmchen shows the coats of arms of the surrounding villages that joined the city in 1994.

A small sculpture park (21) has been located here since 2012 on the initiative of the Oebisfelder Heimatverein. It was further developed in the following years, initially with 4 objects.

Going a little further over the wooden bridge, there is the Oebisfelde picture frame (22), which functions as a photo point for souvenir photos with the castle in the background. Going towards the castle tower, a door leads to the larger of the two castle courtyards.

Here the large servants‘ house (23) houses a museum with a wide range of exhibition topics. Contact persons and opening times can be found here on the homepage or in the information boxes at the castle tower and town hall or at the information box at the castle. Milk banks (24), as in front of the entrance to the large courtyard, were used by the small farmers to put their milk cans down, from where they were brought to the dairies for further processing. Right next to it is today’s Burgcafe (25). A little further you are back at your starting point on the Rathausplatz. The Hotel am Markt is also located there (26).
